KAMPALA –President Yoweri Museveni has directed Resident District Commissioners (RDC) to stop blocking members of opposition political parties from radio talk shows. According to Ofwono Opondo, the executive director, Uganda Media Centre, RDC who blocks opposition should be accountable for their actions.

Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president Dr Kizza Besigye and Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi commonly known as Bobi Wine chief campaigner of the people power among others have been barred from accessing several radio stations by security operatives especially RDC.

“The President recently summoned RDC in Entebbe and instructed them not to block opposition from addressing the public on radio stations. There is no instruction I am aware off. If any RDC blocks the opposition should be brought to book,” he said.

What is Dr Kizza Besigye going to say that he has not said on any radio station, Mr Oppondo told journalists during world press freedom day 2019 dialogue in Kampala Thursday May 2, 2019. The event is a precursor to the world press day celebrated on May 3rd.

He further explained, “He (Besigye) has called President Yoweri Museveni a thief and all sorts of things.”

Mr Opondo called on journalist for professionalism in sector.

“There are 297 radio stations, but most of them are business minded. Most journalists do not have employment contracts. So where is your job security,” he added.

Mr Stephen Tashobia Commissioner at the Electoral Commission also reached out to media fraternity to diligently perform their cardinal role of accurately informing the public.
