KAMPALA, Uganda, President Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) next week embarks on a recruitment of Local Defence Units (LDUs) personnel in Kampala metropolitan area. In press statement by Brig. Richard Karemire, the spokesperson, UPDF, the drive is to support enforcement of law and order. This follows increased murders in Kampala and Wakiso district with Police Officer Muhammad Kirumira being the last victim on his way home in Bulenga, Wakiso District.
“The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces directed a call up of reserves to support enforcement of law and order in Kampala Metropolitan Area. In fulfillment of this directive, the UPDF announces that the recruitment of LDUs personnel from the Districts of Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso will take place starting on 25th September and end on 1st October 2018,” reads the statement issued Saturday September 22, 2018.
He further explained, “Details of this exercise shall be communicated through various media houses but the following criteria shall be adhered to. Must be citizens of Uganda and must be in possession of an original national Identity card, be healthy and medically fit; ready to undergo medical and physical body check and a road run to test endurance and body fitness.’ He added, “Candidates must be of medical, mental, and physical fitness and will be checked at the recruitment centre as well as at the training school. Must be adults between 18 and 35 years have minimum formal education of Primary Leaving Education to Uganda Certificate of Education and preferably with no other formal engagement or employment.”
Letters of recommendations from Local Council (LC) 1 Chairperson, LC1 Secretary for Defence, Parish Internal Security Organization and Gombolola Internal Security Organization duly signed are a must, noted Brig. Karemire. Adding, “Recruits must be residents of the area, disciplined with no criminal record. All members of the security committees and local leaders in the three districts are requested to mobilize towards a successful completion of the exercise.”
According to the statement, the recruitment shall take place in each parish of Kampala district and in major trading centers along the highways in Mukono and Wakiso districts.
He warned, “Any presentation of forged documents is criminal, and culprits will be liable to prosecution.”
The recruitment area has been divided into seven zones, Kampala District with five zones while Wakiso and Mukono Districts cover a zone each as follows; Zone 1- Kampala Central Division, Zone 2- Lubaga Division, Zone 3- Kawempe Division, Zone 4- Nakawa Division, Zone 5- Makindye Division, Zone 6- Mukono District and Zone 07- Wakiso District.
The recruitment will be conducted throughout the seven zones in 99 Wards/Parishes and 89 Trading Centers along major highways/routes.
