KAMPALA, Minister of Trade and Cooperative Amelia Kyambaddye has ordered Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) and Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to enforce laws that ensure hygiene in markets as means of public food safety.

“You find a vendor seating on cabbage he or she is selling, this is unacceptable. UNBS and KCCA should ensure hygiene in markets. Whoever does not comply should be arrested,” she said.

To make matters worse, trucks that deliver merchandise to market collect garbage from the market and dump them along roads on the Kampala outskirts, Ms Amelia told journalists in Kampala Tuesday February 26th, 2019.

Most districts especially Kampala have often been hit by cholera due unhygienic conditions during rainy season.

Kampala has several markets employing most of the informal labour market in the city.

It is not clear when the Minister’s order will be effective.
